On 14 January 2024, the Carlton River History Festival brought together people to follow footsteps leading back in time – to the Mumirimina, the early settlers, relatives near and far – in a collaboration between the Southern Beaches Historical Society, the Lions Club of Sorell, Carlton Chapel owners Chris Wisbey and Sally Dakis, Sorell Council, local artists, Sorell on Stage performers and many wonderful volunteers.
Festival goers enjoyed an art exhibition, a reflection on settler women through the eyes of Charlotte Dodge, unveiling of the colourful and informative Carlton Cemetery sign, along with live music, refreshments and engaging conversations.
The ripple effect has been significant. The hidden history of The Carlton was brought to light, particpants discovered fresh insights and some even found new relations.
Many thanks to Michelle Earley for the fabulous photos taken on the day.
