Signs & activities

Projects undertaken by the Southern Beaches Historical Society include:

  • Collecting research information on family history, heritage properties and local organisations
  • Links with the local schools including the Lagoon Park Outdoor Classroom project at Dodges Ferry
  • Installing historical signs at Dodges Ferry and Lewisham
  • Visits to historical homesteads
  • Participating in the Sorell to Bellerive railway walks and commemoration events
  • Pioneer plaques on graves at the Carlton River cemetery

In recent years we have installed or assisted with historical information in several public areas along the coast:

  • Mumirimina sign at Blue Lagoon (Dodges Ferry) about the Aboriginal heritage of the Southern Beaches area
  • Dodge’s Ferry plaque near Ferry Farm at First Avenue, Dodges Ferry
  • Lagoon Farm sign at Okines Beach, on the foreshore near Dodges Ferry Primary School
  • Dodge’s Ferry and Lagoon Farm mosaic panel at the Lagoon Park shelter shed, Dodges Ferry Primary School
  • Southern Beaches Info Hut mosaic panels and sign near the fire station on Old Forcett Rd, Dodges Ferry
  • Princess Royal sign at Gary St Lewisham
  • Samuel Thorne Reserve sign on Lewisham Scenic Drive

Founding member Judy Pearson published her family history and memoir The Dodges Ferry I Knew in November 2020. Our members have also published articles in the Sorell Historical Society journal Pitt Water Chronicles.

Our recent projects include online publishing of our research journals, research into local beaches and the emergency services of the area, Carlton Chapel and the Carlton Cemetery. Please contact us if you’d like to know more or have ideas for new projects or historical information to share.
